We, the Pulin Family, Ada, Yasha, and Kai moved to Las Vegas in 2010 after the Tex Drive-In (Honoka’a) changed ownership. Ada searched for opportunities to make and sell her malasadas in Las Vegas. She finally decided to start a business from her home, got a cottage license, and sold malasadas at several farmer’s markets. The business did well and outgrew her home kitchen. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus, we had to shut down operations. Throughout the years in Hawaii, we learned that "fresh,” right out of the fryer, is liked the best. This is why we at Ada's Malasadas are filling a niche in the market for fresh malasadas at parties and events.
The recipe for sweet bread came to Hawaii with the sugar workers from Azore’s (Portugal) around the early 1900s. After making sweet bread, pieces of dough were left, fried, and rolled through sugar, becoming what would be malasadas. Mostly made at Lent, it became a commercial product 50 years later. On the Big Island of Hawaii, Portuguese cooks at the Tex Drive-In, which opened in 1969, suggested adding malasadas to the menu. It didn't take long before these Malasadas became well known and liked. When Ada bought the business in 1994, she felt that the product deserved to be featured, and she envisioned a special Malasada kitchen to be a showcase. A full renovation done in 1999 included this kitchen, which became a destination by itself.
